What We Do

The Claremont Soup Kitchen is a non-profit organization that serves the less fortunate men, women, and children who suffer from the lack of basic human needs: material needs, such as food, clothing, and household necessities; psychological needs, such as motivation, self-esteem, and rehabilitation; and social needs, such as support systems and meaningful relationships in the Sullivan County area.

Advocacy - Our staff works with individuals to advocate for them related services they need in the community. Both staff and volunteers also work to address the systemic causes of hunger and political systems that determine public policy and community attitudes.

Food Pantry - Many individuals and families come to receive food boxes one time per month. The boxes contain non-perishable food, fresh vegetables, and frozen meat. Many of these people are the working poor, elderly and disabled living on fixed income.

Meals - The soup kitchen serves a well balanced evening meal four evenings per week. We also give out bakery products, produce and other items each evening for people to take home. This food is donated by local stores and farmers.

Personal Care Supplies - We also give out items such as toilet paper, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shaving equipment, diapers, wipes, feminine products, laundry detergent and some cleaning products.

Household Items - We accept small household items such as dishes, silverware, pots & pans, toasters, coffee makers, towels, sheets, blankets, comforters and kitchen gadgets like spatulas, can openers, cookie sheets and pot holders. We also accept clothes, hats, mittens, jackets, and boots.

Meals To Go Program - Each night hot meals are sent home to individuals who cannot come into the soup kitchen due to health problems. Family members or volunteers take the meal to them.

Backpack Program - We also have a program for families with children. Each month 35 families consisting of 66 children receive a back pack filled with emergency food to make a complete meal for a weekend when they are running low on food. The meal is prepared by the parent with the help of the children. The back pack also contains snacks for school and nutrition information also games of interest for the children to do. This is done on a monthly basis.

Holiday Food Boxes - During the months of November and December, we distribute approximately 500 food boxes and turkeys to individuals and families assuring that they will have holiday meals in their homes.

Support for Children - Children receive holiday items such as Easter baskets, boxes of Valentine cards to distribute to their classmates, Halloween candy & costumes and Christmas stockings from Santa.
